National
Avenue Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ)
On August 4, 1999, ten members of National Avenue teamed up with ten members of Webster Groves Christian Church and Union Avenue Christian Church in St. Louis and headed to Ecuador. The mission was 3-fold: medical, construction and Christian education.
Our team members were:
Medical: Dr. Carson
Agee, Elizabeth Agee, Karen Lance, Melissa Erfling
Construction: Darrell Crocker, Dennis Erfling
Christian Education: Dr. Roger Ray, Charlie Bahn, Evelyn Moler & Karen Eagles
It's impossible to put into words the impact the people of Ecuador had on the members of the mission team. Ecuador is a dichotomy. On the one hand are beautiful, gentle and gracious people surrounded by breathtaking scenery. On the other hand are terrible poverty, back-breaking work and, in some cases, abuse of women. The plight of the Quichua indians is particularly heart breaking, but their faith and gentle spirit are inspiring.
The following is a pictorial account of the mission. Though totally inadequate to convey the impact the people of Ecuador had on our team, perhaps it will give the viewer some feel for the experience.
(There are several pictures, so be patient and scroll slowly!)
