At SMSU, another member of National Avenue, Rev. Howard Cavner, is the campus minister at the United Ministries in Higher Education. These two ministries are quite different from one another in style and program. However, each attempts to reach out to a student population, many of whom are living away from home for the first time in their lives and are in the process of making life-long decisions about career, marriage, and the very meaning of their lives. We hope to offer spiritual nurture to these young adults through worship experiences, classes, and fellowship events.

At SMSU, Howard attempts to represent the Disciples, the U.C.C., Presbyterians, and Lutheran churches as a presence in a secular state university. At Drury, Peter hosts meetings of the Disciples on Campus and oversees several part-time campus chaplains who encourage the religious life of students.

Members of our church have served on the governing board for Howard's work at SMSU and at Drury. Dr. Ray is a past president and current board member of the Drury School of Religion which gives encouraging oversight to the university's campus ministry.
