| Jesus Christ was a
teacher of compassion who insisted that our compassion be personal. He
touched the lepers of his society and told stories about opening our homes
and our purses to those in need no matter how different they are from us.
In the early church, people were expected to bring the homeless into their
own homes, to feed the hungry from their own dinner table, and to share
their own clothing with those in need. We have lost a great deal in moving
our compassion into institutions, but few of us have the faith to do what
the early church did in opening our own homes to the homeless and hungry.
Thankfully, in Springfield, we have partners in ministry who give direct aid to the hungry and homeless among us. Our church supports both the Missouri Hotel (a largely Roman Catholic ministry whose operational budget now exceeds $4 million/year) and the Victory Mission (a largely Assemblies of God and Evangelical ministry with a budget of $1.6 million per year). At the Missouri Hotel and The Kitchen, more than 900 meals are served every day. At the Victory Mission, nearly 200 meals are provided daily. In this very cold winter, both of our partners in this compassionate ministry have been asked to house more and more homeless persons. Throwing mattresses on the floors of their lobbies and hallways every night, these two agencies provide shelter for hundreds of people who have lost their jobs or otherwise lost their way in life. We are deeply grateful for the staff and directors of these two ministries. Members of our congregation serve on the boards of each shelter. We strive through our budget and our Outreach Foundation to financially support those who directly do the work of compassion in our stead. There are opportunities to volunteer time in either the Missouri Hotel (837-1540) or the Victory Mission (831-6387)) and gifts of food and money are always needed.
