National Benevolent Association
George Schooling
and Bill & Lola Fleming are former members of NACC who reside at
Foxwood Springs Retirement Community in Raymore, Mo. on the south side of
Kansas City. Luanne Langley’s aunt who died recently was a resident
of Lenoir Retirement Community in Columbia, Mo.
Both Foxwood Springs and
Lenoir are excellent facilities of the National Benevolent Association (NBA)
of our Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Both offer multi-levels of care
including assisted living or Alzheimer’s care, in addition to independent
living in houses, duplexes, and apartments. Lenoir also has a daycare program
for pre-schoolers. Both the children and the senior adults benefit from the
frequent interaction made possible with this arrangement.
These are not the only
NBA facilities in Missouri. There are several apartment complexes for older
adults with average or low
incomes. These are located in Cameron, Eldon, Nevada, Sedalia, Trenton, and
St. Louis.
Gateway Accessible Homes
are also located in St. Louis. These are group homes for adults with physical
or developmental disabilities. The Olive Branch is yet another NBA facility in
St. Louis serving pregnant teens and unwed mothers.
The St. Louis Christian
Home, originally an orphanage, is now known as ECHO, the Emergency
Children’s Home. It serves abused and neglected children and youth. Some of
the residents have been in trouble at school or with the police, but others
may simply have no place else to go when parents are sent to jail.
NBA facilities are
located in 23 states. Several new locations are now under construction and
others are being planned, including one in Kansas City. Every day, NBA
shelters over 10,000 people in the U.S. The NBA motto is: “What we do
best is CARE.” Disciples
of Christ can have tremendous pride in our outstanding and highly respected
NBA programs and facilities for children, families, older adults, and people
who are abled differently.
