Post-Katrina/Rita/Ike Devastations

Pearlington, Mississippi

The Pearlington Recovery Center supports the efforts to rebuild Pearlington, MS, a community outside of New Orleans that was devastated after Hurricane Katrina passed over the town in 2005. The Center is an ecumenical agency providing volunteers housing, feeding, and mission trip coordination in rebuilding this community of primarily elderly and low income residents. NACC teams have made five trips (twice annually) since 2007 and have participated in the building of nine new homes. Most recently, NACC’s 60th Anniversary offering raised funds to pay for one home as well as replace the boat lost by James Peebles in his heroic efforts to save 26 residents from drowning post-Katrina.

New Orleans, Louisana

The Westside Mission Center in New Orleans is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denominational outreach in the long-term recovery effort post-Katrina in the "lower Ninth Ward." The Center is coordinated by the Great River Region of the Christian Church and directed by Brother Vance Moore. During 2005-2006 NACC sent five mission teams to New Orleans and Covington, LA to be a part of this ministry and one member served as a Hurricane Recovery Director for three months.

Youth Mission Trips

NACC has a long-history of mission trips as part of our youth ministries programming. Such trips have varied in size and location, generally depending on perceived needs, adult sponsors, staff, and the numbers of participating youth. In 2006 two youth trips went to Texas (the Port Arthur and Beaumont) area to help restore hurricane damaged homes; in 2004 to the inner-city of Chicago to work in a soup kitchen and daycare center; from 1996 through 2003 we made annual trips to Appalachian Kentucky to be a part of the Christian Church's "Lend-a-Hand" youth mission trip programming (it is no longer operative); in 1993 to St. Louis to help with Mississippi River flood relief and Franklin, LA for Hurricane Andrew clean-up; and in 1978 to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to work on the Juliette Fowler NBA homes for the aged.
